Gary Needs a Job: how STAMP's story begins (S1E01)

Episode 1 of the STAMP series: a packed lunch, the classifieds and one very honest job market. Here's what happens, the joke, and how the 33-second Short was made.

Gary reads the newspaper classifieds at breakfast while Lisa watches him over her coffee

Before the conveyor belt, before the stamp, before the boss yelling across the warehouse, there was a kitchen table. Episode 1 of the STAMP series starts the way a lot of hard months start: with breakfast, a newspaper and a job ad that wants something you don’t have.

What happens in the episode

It’s morning at Gary and Lisa’s house. Gary is finishing Lisa’s packed lunch, and she catches him in the act:

Lisa: “Is that mine?”

Gary: “Unless I got a job while making it.”

That’s the whole situation in two lines. Lisa is heading off to work; Gary is heading back to the classifieds. Over coffee she asks if he found anything, and he gives her the honest answer.

The joke: “Apparently experience helps”

Every STAMP episode is built around one real setup-and-punchline gag, and episode 1’s is about the oldest catch-22 of job hunting:

Gary: “Apparently everyone wants experience.”

Lisa: “That’s stupid.”

Gary: “Apparently experience helps.”

Lisa reacts, indignant, to the idea that every job asks for experience Lisa takes the job market personally.

Lisa is outraged on his behalf. Gary has already made peace with how unfair it is. That small difference between them, her fighting for him and him quietly absorbing it, sets up their whole relationship for the season.

“My hero”

The clock says Lisa is late. Gary hands her the lunch at the door (“Lunch.” / “My hero.”), she hugs him with the lunchbox squashed between them, and she’s gone.

Then the house goes quiet. Gary sits back down, runs his finger down the ads, and the smile fades. The last shot is just the door closing. No music cue, no big moment, just a guy alone with the paper again.

Gary, alone at the table, follows a job listing with his finger and looks worried Day one of the job hunt.

Why the series starts here

STAMP the game drops you straight onto the warehouse floor: packages coming down the belt, one stamp, no time to think. The series goes back to the part the game skips: why would anyone take the worst job in the world? Because the rent doesn’t care how unfair the job market is, and because someone at home is packing your lunch, or you’re packing theirs.

Episode 1 is deliberately small. You meet Gary as a decent, slightly defeated guy before anything goes wrong, so it means something when everything does.

How the Short was made

  • Format: vertical 9:16, final cut of 33 seconds, 15 shots.
  • Storyboards first: every shot was storyboarded as a still frame (the images in this post are those frames), then animated shot by shot.
  • Shot variety: an establishing shot of the neighborhood, close-ups for the reactions, inserts of the newspaper and the kitchen clock, and a quiet transition on the door to close.

Where it goes next

In episode 2, Gary Finds STAMP, the classifieds finally give him something. Whether that’s good news is a different question. Watch episode 1 below, then pick up a shift yourself: STAMP is free on iOS and Android.
